MERRY CHRISTMAS

WISH YOU ALL
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR...

Christmas Joy Becomes a Prayer, Says Pope
Beseeches Peace at Christmas Eve Mass

VATICAN CITY: Benedict XVI is asking the Christ Child tonight to establish the dominion of His truth and love.

The Pope made this prayer during the Christmas Eve Mass that he celebrated in St. Peter's Basilica beginning at 10 p.m. Rome time.

He reflected on the prophecies applied to Christ that were originally part of the coronation rite of the kings of Israel.

"Truly," the Pontiff said, "the words of Israel’s coronation rite were only ever rites of hope which looked ahead to a distant future that God would bestow. None of the kings who were greeted in this way lived up to the sublime content of these words. In all of them, those words [...] were only pointers towards what was to come -- as it were signposts of hope indicating a future that at that moment was still beyond comprehension."

Thus, he reflected, the fulfillment of the prophecy in Christ "is both infinitely greater and in worldly terms smaller than the prophecy itself might lead one to imagine."

"It is greater," the Pope said, "in the sense that this child is truly the Son of God, truly 'God from God, light from light, begotten not made, of one being with the Father.' The infinite distance between God and man is overcome. God has not only bent down, as we read in the Psalms; he has truly 'come down,' he has come into the world, he has become one of us, in order to draw all of us to himself. This child is truly Emmanuel -- God-with-us. [...]

"But at the same time it is true that the 'rod of his oppressor' is not yet broken, the boots of warriors continue to tramp and the 'garment rolled in blood' (Isaiah 9:4f) still remains."

Benedict XVI said that part of Christmas is "simply joy at God’s closeness. We are grateful that God gives himself into our hands as a child, begging as it were for our love, implanting his peace in our hearts."

"But this joy is also a prayer," he said. "Lord, make your promise come fully true. Break the rods of the oppressors. Burn the tramping boots. Let the time of the garments rolled in blood come to an end. Fulfill the prophecy that 'of peace there will be no end' (Isaiah 9:7)."

"We thank you for your goodness," the Holy Father prayed, "but we also ask you to show forth your power. Establish the dominion of your truth and your love in the world -- the 'kingdom of righteousness, love and peace.'"

BARCELONA'S CHURCH AS A CATECHESIS ON THE LIFE OF CHRIST: SAYS BENEDICT XVI

BARCELONA, Spain: Barcelona's Church of the Holy Family is not only the masterpiece of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926), it's also a catechesis on the life of Christ, says Benedict XVI.

The Pope praised the work of Gaudí today before praying the midday Angelus together with those gathered at the church, and after he presided at the Holy Family's dedication Mass, during which he declared the church a minor basilica.

He noted how "the genius" of Gaudí, "filled with devotion to the Holy Family of Nazareth," and "inspired by the ardour of his Christian faith, succeeded in raising this sanctuary as a hymn of praise to God carved in stone."

"A praise of God," the Pontiff added, "which, as with the birth of Christ, has had as its protagonists the most humble and simple of people."

Benedict XVI said that through Gaudí used his craft to "bring the Gospel to everyone."

"For this reason," the Pope explained, "he conceived of the three porticos of the exterior of the church as a catechesis on the life of Jesus Christ, as a great rosary, which is the prayer of ordinary people, a prayer in which are contemplated the joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries of our Lord."

The Holy Father also noted the charitable works of the architect, who "designed and financed from his own savings the creation of a school for the children of the workers and of the poorest families of the neighborhood, which was at that time a outlying suburb of Barcelona."

Reflecting on the family, the Pontiff called it the "hope of humanity."

He noted that Christ, "under the watchful care of Joseph and Mary, in the silence of the home of Nazareth, taught us without words of the dignity and the primordial value of marriage and the family."

Benedict XVI said that it is in the family where "life finds its welcome from conception to natural death."

"[Christ] has taught us also that the entire Church, by hearing and putting his word into practice, becomes his family," the Pope added. "And he has exhorted us to be a seed of fraternity which, sown in every heart, nourishes hope."

HAPPY FEAST... ST. CHARLES, PRAY FOR US

St. Charles Borromeo

Born: 2 October 1538

Died: 4 November 1584

Canonized: 1610

Feast Day: November 4

Patron Saint of: catechists, seminarians

Charles was the son of Count Gilbert Borromeo and Margaret Medici, sister of Pope Pius IV. He was born at the family castle of Arona on Lake Maggiore, Italy, on 2 October 1538. He received the clerical tonsure when he was twelve and was sent to the Benedictine abbey of SS. Gratian and Felinus at Arona for his education.

In 1559 his uncle was elected Pope Pius IV and the following year, named him his Secretary of State and created him a cardinal and administrator of the see of Milan. He served as Pius' legate on numerous diplomatic missions and in 1562, was instrumental in having Pius reconvene the Council of Trent, which had been suspended in 1552. Charles played a leading role in guiding and in fashioning the decrees of the third and last group of sessions. He refused the headship of the Borromeo family on the death of Count Frederick Borromeo, was ordained a priest in 1563, and was consecrated bishop of Milan the same year. Before being allowed to take possession of his see, he oversaw the catechism, missal, and breviary called for by the Council of Trent. When he finally did arrive at Milan (which had been without a resident bishop for eighty years) in 1556, he instituted radical reforms despite great opposition, with such effectiveness that it became a model see. He put into effect measures to improve the morals and manners of the clergy and laity, raised the effectiveness of the diocesan operation, established seminaries for the education of the clergy, founded a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine for the religious instruction of children and encouraged the Jesuits in his see. He increased the systems to the poor and the needy, was most generous in his help to the English college at Douai, and during his bishopric held eleven diocesan synods and six provincial councils. He founded a society of secular priests, Oblates of St. Ambrose (now Oblates of St. Charles) in 1578, and was active in preaching, resisting the inroads of Protestantism, and bringing back lapsed Catholics to the Church. He encountered opposition from many sources in his efforts to reform people and institutions.

He died at Milan on the night of 3-4 November 1584, and was canonized in 1610. He was one of the towering figures of the Catholic Reformation, a patron of learning and the arts, and though he achieved a position of great power, he used it with humility, personal sanctity, and unselfishness to reform the Church of the evils and abuses so prevalent among the clergy and the nobles of the times.

POPE CANONISED SIX NEW SAINTS

VATICAN CITY: If one does not believe in God's goodness, he cannot truly pray, says Benedict XVI.

The Pope made this reflection today at a Mass in St. Peter's in which he canonized six newly recognized saints: Stanislaw Soltys, André Bessette, Cándida María de Jesús Cipitria y Barriola, Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Giulia Salzano and Battista Camilla Varano.

The group included the first male Canadian-born saint (André Bessette) and the first Australian saint (Mary of the Cross MacKillop).

The Holy Father began his homily reflecting on a lesson he said is fundamental in today's liturgy: "the necessity to pray always, without tiring."

"Sometimes we grow tired of prayer, we have the impression that prayer is not very useful for life, that it is not very effective," he said. "Thus, we are tempted to dedicate ourselves to activity, to employ every human method to accomplish our goals, and we do not approach God. But Jesus says that we must pray always, and he does this through a specific parable."

The Pontiff went on to reflect about the parable of the persistent widow and dishonest judge.

After recounting the story, he noted: "Jesus reflects, using an 'a fortiori' argument: If a dishonest judge in the end allows himself to be convinced by the entreaties of a widow, how much more will God, who is good, listen to those who pray. God in fact is generosity in person, he is merciful, and so he is always disposed to listen to prayers.

"For this reason, we must not give up hope, but always insist in prayer."

Basis

The Gospel concludes, Benedict XVI said, with an invitation to grow in faith.

"[P]rayer must be the expression of faith, otherwise it is not true prayer," he said. "If one does not believe in the goodness of God, he cannot pray in a truly adequate way. Faith is essential as the basis of the attitude of prayer."

And in this context, the Holy Father went on to offer a brief reflection on each of the newly recognized saints, speaking in several of the saints' native languages.

At the end, he called the faithful to "give thanks to the Lord for the gift of holiness, which shines in the Church and today illumines the faces of these brothers and sisters of ours."

"Jesus also invites each of us to follow him to inherit eternal life," the Pope said. "Let us be drawn by the luminous examples, let us be guided by their teachings, so that our existence be a canticle of praise to God."

"I STARTED SCHOOL 77 YEARS AGO," POPE TELLS CHILDREN

Encourages Friendship; Reminds Them Jesus Is Greatest Friend

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy, SEPT. 26, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI told a group of children this week that making friends is a wonderful thing, but that their first friend is Jesus.

The Pope said this in an audience Thursday with some 400 students, parents and teachers from a primary school of Castel Gandolfo, run by the religious sisters of the Maestre Pie Filippini.

He reflected with the students from the Paul VI Pontifical Primary School about his own beginnings at school.

"[I]t has been 77 years since I started going to school," the Holy Father remembered. "It was in a small town of 300 souls, a little bit of a 'backwater' [town] one would say. Nevertheless, we learned the essential."

He recounted how he and the other children learned to read and write, and he reflected, "I think that it is a great thing to be able to write and read, because this way we can know the thought of others, read newspapers, books; we can know what was written 2,000 years ago or a longer time ago."

"[A]bove all, there is something extraordinary," the Pontiff continued, "God wrote a book, that is, he spoke to us men and found people who wrote with the Word of God, so that, reading it, we can also read what God says to us."

It's very important, Benedict XVI told the children, to learn in school everything that is necessary for life, "and also to learn to know God, to know Jesus and thus to know how to live well."

"You make many friends in school and it is beautiful; in this way a great family is formed," he said. "But among the great friends, the first that we make, whom we know, must be Jesus, who is everyone’s friend and really gives us the path of life."

VINCENT DE PAUL SEEN AS A PAGE FROM THE GOSPEL

Spiritual Family Marks Anniversaries of Founders' Deaths

ROME, SEPT. 27, 2010: The saint celebrated in today's liturgy and his spiritual counterpart were "pages of the Gospel lived with intensity," according to the retired prefect of the Vatican's congregation for saints' causes.

This was the description used Friday by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins when he spoke of St. Vincent de Paul and his principal collaborator, St. Louise de Marillac.

The cardinal was opening a three-day conference in Rome, which closed the jubilee celebrations marking the 350th anniversary of the deaths of St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) and St. Louise de Marillac (1591-1660).

"They were two great teachers of charity because they were in the first place two great teachers of the spiritual life," the cardinal reflected.

He pointed out that "charisms are a gift of the Holy Spirit granted to the Christian community so that it will have the courage to evangelize, teach and heal, but above all to witness and love."

SCOTS LINE STREETS TO WELCOME POPE

Pontiff Completes 1st Day of UK Trip
EDINBURGH, Scotland: Benedict XVI landed at Edinburgh airport shortly before half past ten this morning amid a blustery and chill wind.

But the sun was also shining brightly and the Holy Father looked rested, at peace and happy as he came off the papal plane.

He was greeted by the Duke of Edinburgh, an unprecedented gesture signifying how much the Crown values this, the first state by a Pope. Also there to meet him were the primates of Scotland, England and Wales, Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien and Archbishop Vincent Nichols, and the government's coordinator of the visit, Lord Patten of Barnes.

Well-wishers lined the route of the Pope's motorcade as he was driven to Holyroodhouse Palace, the official Scottish Royal residence where the queen greeted him in the front courtyard.

Also present to meet the Holy Father were the archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, the deputy prime minister of the United Kingdom, Nick Clegg, the first minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond, and the head of the Church of Scotland.

The grandeur of the occasion was not lost on the Pope. As the Scots Guards band played national anthem of Great Britain, he removed his zucchetto as a mark of respect. He then walked -- still smiling -- into the Palace with the queen where the two leaders and Prince Phillip had a private audience lasting around 20 minutes.

WORLD YOUTH DAY PARTICIPANTS URGED TO PREPARE IN PRAYER

Madrid Archdiocese Readies for Event

MADRID, Spain- Participants planning to attend the 2011 World Youth Day in Madrid are urged to begin preparing now in prayer, sacramental growth and witnessing to the faith.

This was part of the pastoral plan for the Madrid Archdiocese for this year, which will culminate in the youth day next year.

Ángel Matesanz, who is in charge of the youth day's pastoral preparation, pointed out that the objective of the plan is to "strengthen our adherence to Jesus Christ and our commitment to the proclamation of the Gospel."

Metasanz also pointed out the importance of prayer in a missionary ambit: "We must allow ourselves to be seduced by Jesus Christ and become his collaborators."

Gregorio Roldán, secretary general of the event organizing committee, as well as the director of the archdiocese's youth pastoral care, indicated that "this year the objectives of the pastoral plan have a greater projection because of the reception of young people from all over the world during World Youth Day."

FEAST OF THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS: (14th Sept)

This feast is called in Greek Ὕψωσις τοῦ Τιμίου Σταυροῦ (literally, "Raising Aloft of the Precious Cross"). In Latin it is called Exaltatio Sanctae Crucis (literally, "Raising Aloft of the Holy Cross". (The word "Exaltatio" is sometimes translated as "Exaltation", at other times, as in the 1973 ICEL translation, as "Triumph".) In some parts of the Anglican Communion the feast is called Holy Cross Day, a name also used by Lutherans. The celebration is sometimes called Feast of the Glorious Cross. [1]

The True Cross is said to have been discovered in 326 by the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine I, Helena of Constantinople, during a pilgrimage she made to Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Helena and Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, with a portion [2] of the cross placed inside it. In 614, that portion of the cross was carried away from the church by the Persians, and remained missing until it was recaptured by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius in 628. Initially taken to Constantinople, the cross was returned to the church the following year.

The date of the feast marks the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 335. This was a two-day festival: although the actual consecration of the church was on September 13, the cross itself was brought outside the church on September 14 so that the clergy and faithful could pray before the True Cross, and all could come forward to venerate it.

POPE SENDS NEW YEAR MESSAGE TO RABBI

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 9, 2010 - Benedict XVI sent a message of congratulations and friendship to Riccardo Di Segni, chief rabbi of the Jewish community of Rome, on the occasion of the Jewish festivities celebrated this month.

The Jewish calendar marks Rosh Hashana 5771 (New Year) Sept. 9-10; Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) Sept. 18; and Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles) Sept. 23-Sept. 29.

In his message, the Pontiff expressed to Di Segni and to all the Jewish community of Rome his "most cordial and sincere wishes," as well as his "hope that these celebrations will bring copious blessings from the Eternal and be a source of profound joy."

Benedict XVI added the hope that "the will grow in us to promote justice and peace, so needed by the world today."

The Holy Father said he remembered the visit he made to the Synagogue of Rome last Jan. 17 "with feelings of gratitude and affection."

The Pontiff ended by expressing that "God, in his goodness, may protect the whole community and grant us to grow, in Rome and in the world, in mutual friendship."

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DEAR MOM...

Holy Father Remembers Mary on Her Birthday

VATICAN CITY, SEPT. 8, 2010 - Benedict XVI is recalling that today marks the feast of the Virgin Mary's birth, celebrated nine months after the Dec. 8 celebration of her immaculate conception.

The Pope spoke of her feast day at the conclusion of the general audience in Paul VI Hall, during his traditional greeting to youth, the sick and newlyweds.

"Today we celebrate the liturgical memorial of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary," he said. "The Second Vatican Council says that Mary precedes us in the way of faith because she 'believed that what was spoken to her by the Lord would be fulfilled' (Luke 1:45)."

The Holy Father then drew on the example of Mary's faith for his threefold recommendation.

He said: "For you, young people, I ask the Holy Virgin the gift of an ever more mature faith; for you the sick, an ever stronger faith; and for you, dear newlyweds, an ever deeper faith."

CENTENARY OF MOTHER TERESA'S BIRTH

CALCUTTA,- Mother Teresa of Calcutta would have turned 100 years old on Thursday (26th August). The order she founded Missionaries of Charity, as well as faithful and nonbelievers from around the world are joining in preparation for the anniversary.

"Her life and work continue to be an inspiration for young and old, rich and poor from all walks of life, religions and nations," wrote Sister Mary Prema, the superior-general of the Missionaries of Charity since 2009.

The sister's Aug. 8 letter recommends: "Let us celebrate Mother's birth centenary by sharing the joy of loving and being loved. Let us pray to know better God's love for us."

In addition to the release of another book, "Where There Is Love, There Is God," which offers writings from Blessed Teresa, a host of activities have been planned around the world.

A Mother Teresa postage stamp will go on sale in the United States on Thursday, with similar initiatives in Austria, Kosovo and Monoco. France has coined four collector-edition coins, one showing Mother Teresa with Pope John Paul II.

The Mother Teresa Express Train will be launched on her birthday in India; and on the Niagara River in New York, the Peace Bridge will be lit with blue and white, the colors of the Missionaries of Charity.

Obviously a range of spiritual activities will also mark the day.

In Rome, Cardinal Angelo Comastri, archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica, will preside over a Mass in the Basilica of St. Lawrence in Damascus.

Religious congregations and contemplative communities in Rome founded by Blessed Teresa, as well as volunteers, benefactors and persons staying in the Roman convents, will attend the Mass.

The celebration will be preceded by the opening of an exhibition of photographs, titled Blessed Teresa of Calcutta: Life, Works, Message.

Cardinal Ivan Dias, prefect of the Congregation of Peoples, will mark her liturgical feast: There will be a vigil of prayer on Saturday, Sept. 4, and a Eucharistic celebration on Sunday, Sept. 5.

Mother Teresa relics will be displayed for veneration in the midwest United States and Canada. And many novenas will be held in Calcutta and in other places.

An extensive list of celebrations and initiatives can be found at the Web site of the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Center.

HAPPY FEAST.... ST. JOHN MARIA VIANNEY, PRAY FOR US

"I love You, O my God, and my only desire is to love You until the last breath of my life.
I love You, O my infinitely lovable God,
and I would rather die loving You, than live without loving You.
I love You, Lord and the only grace I ask is to love You eternally
My God, if my tongue cannot say in every moment that I love You,
I want my heart to repeat it to You as often as I draw breath."

FEAST OF JESUS' GRANDPARENTS: JOACHIM & ANNE

Joachim and Anne Asked to Intercede for Families
ROME, JULY 26, 2010 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is joining with the faithful celebrating Grandparents' Day today, the feast of Jesus' grandparents: Joachim and Anne.

At a celebration in Jaen, Spain, a papal message was read after a Mass celebrated by Bishop Ramón del Hoyo López.

The Holy Father's message and blessing were sent by Archbishop Renzo Fratini, the apostolic nuncio in Spain.

The Grandparents' Day celebration was organized by the Golden Age: Messengers of Peace Association. The papal message was addressed to the president of that group, Father Ángel García Rodríguez.

"The Holy Father, appreciating the religious, spiritual, human and social wealth of grandparents, is happy to join in this gesture of affection and gratitude to them and encourages them to persevere in the faith, giving meaning with the light of Christ the Lord to all the moments of their lives."

The message ends with the prayer that the Lord will help grandparents "with his providence and mercy" and imploring for them "the protection of the holy grandparents Joachim and Anne, and of their daughter, the glorious Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus Christ Our Lord."

In Rome

The Parish of St. Anne in the Diocese of Rome also marked the feast.

Cardinal Angelo Comastri, president of the Vatican office that oversees construction matters related to St. Peter's, presided over a Mass there in which he emphasized the importance of the family.

He also read a prayer that he himself had composed.

Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes, also celebrated a Mass at the church.

The faithful asked St. Anne to intercede for grandparents, so that they will be able to offer everyone the testimony of an exemplary life in their irreplaceable moral and spiritual task with children and adolescents.
