BENEDICT XVI TO BEATIFY JOHN PAUL II ON MAY

Pontiff's Great Fame of Sanctity Acknowledged
VATICAN CITY: Benedict XVI is planning to preside over the beatification rite for John Paul II on May 1, Divine Mercy Sunday, in the Vatican.
A communiqué from the Congregation for Saints' Causes announced that today the Pope, in an audience with the congregation's prefect, Cardinal Angelo Amato, "authorized the dicastery to promulgate the decree of the miracle attributed to the intercession of Venerable Servant of God John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla)."
This was the final step in the process preceding the beatification rite, which will be celebrated on Divine Mercy Sunday, a feast day instituted by John Paul II.
The communiqué noted: "It is well known that, by pontifical dispensation, his cause began before the end of the five-year period which the current norms stipulate must pass following the death of a Servant of God.
"This provision was solicited by the great fame of sanctity which Pope John Paul II enjoyed during his life, in his death and after his death.
"In all other ways, the normal canonical dispositions concerning causes of beatification and canonization were observed in full."
The diocesan investigation into the cause for beatification of the Pontiff took place between June 2005 and April 2007. On Dec. 19, 2009, Benedict XVI authorized the promulgation of the decree on his predecessor's heroic virtue.

Happy Feast of EPIPHANY

The word Epiphany in Syriac is known as ‘Denha’. It means ‘dawn’ ‘revelation’ ‘manifestation’ etc.

In this season, the Church recalls the public life of Jesus which began with his baptism at Jordan. Jesus reveals Himself to the world. Father and the Holy Spirit witness to it: ‘ This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased’ (Mt. 3:7)

The Feast of Denha which is celebrated on 6th January is called ‘Pindikuthiperunnal’ by faithful who live in the northern part of Kerala and ‘Rakkuli’ by people of the south. ‘Pindikuthiperunnal’ originated from the practice of going around the ‘vazhapindi’ decorated with lights and singing ‘God is light’ commemorating Jesus the light of the world. The name ‘Rakkuli’ came from the ritual bath that our forefathers used to have in the river or pool near by, on the eve of the feast. It was a religious ceremony. The most important themes commemorated during these days are the baptism of Jesus, His public life, His divine and human nature, His intimate relation with the Father and the Holy Spirit and his self-emptying
love. In this season the readings chosen are mainly connected with the public life of Jesus. This period reminds us of the baptism of Jesus and our own baptism and the responsibilities we have undertaken with it. Hence, let us strive hard to know Him more intensely and to live like the children of God during this season.

Christmas Joy Becomes a Prayer, Says Pope
Beseeches Peace at Christmas Eve Mass

VATICAN CITY: Benedict XVI is asking the Christ Child tonight to establish the dominion of His truth and love.

The Pope made this prayer during the Christmas Eve Mass that he celebrated in St. Peter's Basilica beginning at 10 p.m. Rome time.

He reflected on the prophecies applied to Christ that were originally part of the coronation rite of the kings of Israel.

"Truly," the Pontiff said, "the words of Israel’s coronation rite were only ever rites of hope which looked ahead to a distant future that God would bestow. None of the kings who were greeted in this way lived up to the sublime content of these words. In all of them, those words [...] were only pointers towards what was to come -- as it were signposts of hope indicating a future that at that moment was still beyond comprehension."

Thus, he reflected, the fulfillment of the prophecy in Christ "is both infinitely greater and in worldly terms smaller than the prophecy itself might lead one to imagine."

"It is greater," the Pope said, "in the sense that this child is truly the Son of God, truly 'God from God, light from light, begotten not made, of one being with the Father.' The infinite distance between God and man is overcome. God has not only bent down, as we read in the Psalms; he has truly 'come down,' he has come into the world, he has become one of us, in order to draw all of us to himself. This child is truly Emmanuel -- God-with-us. [...]

"But at the same time it is true that the 'rod of his oppressor' is not yet broken, the boots of warriors continue to tramp and the 'garment rolled in blood' (Isaiah 9:4f) still remains."

Benedict XVI said that part of Christmas is "simply joy at God’s closeness. We are grateful that God gives himself into our hands as a child, begging as it were for our love, implanting his peace in our hearts."

"But this joy is also a prayer," he said. "Lord, make your promise come fully true. Break the rods of the oppressors. Burn the tramping boots. Let the time of the garments rolled in blood come to an end. Fulfill the prophecy that 'of peace there will be no end' (Isaiah 9:7)."

"We thank you for your goodness," the Holy Father prayed, "but we also ask you to show forth your power. Establish the dominion of your truth and your love in the world -- the 'kingdom of righteousness, love and peace.'"
